Pest control in Marietta  ›  Rodent & wildlife removal  ›  Acworth

This page covers rodent and wildlife work in Acworth, where the houses are young and the trees behind them are not. For the whole method, start here, then read this for the local part.

Quick answer. Acworth’s median build year is around 2000, so most of the town is slab-on-grade with a modern roof: continuous ridge vent, vinyl soffit panels, clipped gable louvers. The animals are the same gray squirrels and roof rats as everywhere else in the county, but they arrive from shoreline timber that was never cleared and enter at hardware failures rather than rotted wood.

What shapes the job here

How many openings a roof has and how high they sit, the pitch and whether a ladder reaches the gable, whether the seal can be fastened to vinyl or has to go behind it, whether there are young in the attic, how much insulation is soiled, and whether the scope is trapping only or trapping plus exclusion.

1  New houses, old trees

Acworth is a newer town than most of Cobb County, with a large share of its houses going up between 2000 and 2009, and the usual assumption is that a newer house has fewer animal problems. On the lake it does not work out that way. Lots around Lake Acworth and Lake Allatoona were cut through standing hardwood, and the timber on the water side stayed where it was. Behind a great many of those lots is shoreline and park land nobody is ever going to clear, which is a permanent supply of gray squirrels sitting twenty feet from a modern roof.

Lake living then adds its own harborage at ground level. Boats on trailers under canvas, covered personal watercraft, a dock box, a shed of life jackets and rope, bags of seed in a detached garage. Roof rats and mice nest in engine covers and rolled canvas through the summer and are already on the property when the nights cool. A yard with three stored boats is a yard with three nest sites, and no amount of work on the house changes that until the storage is dealt with.

Acworth sits at the newer end of the county. That changes which part of the roof fails, not whether one does.

2  A modern roof fails at the hardware

On a 1970s house an animal chews through soft fascia. On an Acworth house built in 2002 there is usually nothing soft to chew, so it goes after the joints instead. The end of a continuous ridge vent, where the baffle stops short and the cap shingle bridges a gap. A vinyl soffit panel that has worked out of its J-channel at an outside corner, leaving a slot into the eave. A gable louver with the builder’s staple screen behind it, pushed in from the outside in about a minute. The vent for a bath fan or a dryer with its flapper broken off.

That changes what the seal has to be. Vinyl and aluminum will not hold a fastener against a determined squirrel, so the repair goes behind the panel into framing, or the panel comes off and goes back over galvanized hardware cloth. Expanding foam pressed into a soffit slot looks finished from the driveway and lasts one season. Ask specifically what the sealing material is and what it is fastened to, because on a house of this era that is the whole question.

One more Acworth detail: these roofs are steep. A 2000s two-story with a 9:12 pitch and a gable at the third-floor height is a different access problem from a ranch, and that is a legitimate reason for one proposal to take longer than another on identical findings. The general reasoning is laid out in the complete guide.

Say how high the gable is

Roof pitch, story count and where you hear the noise decide the access. A licensed local crew can scope it from those three things.

3  Trapping clears it, sealing ends it

Exclusion beats trapping and it is not close. Traps take out what is in the attic this week; the opening is a permanent feature of the house and will be used again by whatever is next out of the shoreline timber. A proposal with trapping on it and nothing about sealing is a proposal to come back next autumn.

Sequence matters too. Everything is sealed except the main run, the animals are trapped or let out through a one-way door, and the last opening closes only when the attic is empty. Do it the other way round and you seal a litter in a wall, which in an Acworth two-story means opening a ceiling to get it out.

The timing is the same across the county. Calls start the week overnight lows drop, usually in the middle of October, which makes late summer the sensible window for the work: an empty attic is quick to seal and an occupied one is not. Between now and then, the highest-value thing you can do yourself is cut limbs back off the roof and get the boat covers out of the yard.

5  Questions

My house is twenty years old. How is anything getting in?

Through hardware rather than rot. Ridge vent ends, soffit panels out of their channel, stapled gable screen and broken dryer flappers are the Acworth entries. None of them look like damage from the ground, which is why these houses often go a season before anyone works out where the noise is coming from.

Does backing onto the lake really make a difference?

Yes, and it is the one thing you cannot change. Shoreline and park timber is a reservoir that restocks itself every year. Nothing you do alters the woods, so the work concentrates on your own edge: limbs off the roof, hardware sealed, stored boats and covers away from the walls.

Can foam be used to seal a vinyl soffit?

It should not be. Foam is chewed out and it hides the opening rather than closing it. On vinyl the correct repair goes behind the panel into framing, or the panel is lifted and refitted over galvanized hardware cloth. Ask what the material is and what it is fastened to.

Should I deal with the boat and the shed too?

If you want it to hold, yes. Rolled canvas, engine covers and a shed of seed are nesting and feeding sites within a few feet of the house. Sealing the roof while leaving three nest sites in the yard just means the next animal spends longer looking for a way in.
