Pest control in Marietta  ›  Mosquito control  ›  Acworth

This page covers what mosquito work involves in Acworth, where two lakes change the season and the gear people keep for them does most of the breeding. Start with the Marietta pest control guide for the whole method, then read this for the local part.

Quick answer. Lake Acworth and Lake Allatoona do not breed the mosquito biting you. The Asian tiger mosquito is a container breeder, and on a lake lot the containers are the boat cover, the upturned kayak, the cooler on the dock, the bait bucket and the tarp over the trailer. A correct job empties and tips all of it, then puts a residual on shaded foliage every three to four weeks, usually from late March into November.

What shapes the job here

How close the lot sits to the water, how much shoreline frontage you have and how much of it is shaded, the amount of stored boating and dock gear that can hold water, lot size and how much of it a crew can reach, how far the treatable ground extends before it becomes public shoreline, and the interval you choose across a season that is longer here than inland.

1  The lake is not the nursery

Almost every Acworth homeowner assumes the water is the problem. It generally is not. A big open body like Lake Allatoona has fish, wave action and a moving surface, which is poor ground for mosquito larvae. Lake Acworth, dammed and shallower, is friendlier but still not what produces the insect biting your ankles at three in the afternoon. That insect is the Asian tiger mosquito, and it breeds in small containers, not in lakes.

What the lakes do give you is humidity and a longer warm season, and the lake lifestyle gives you containers by the dozen. Walk a typical lot off Beach Street or down toward a Corps cove and you will find a boat cover with a sag in it, a kayak lying hull-up with two inches in the cockpit, a cooler with the lid ajar, a bait bucket, a child’s paddle board bag, a rolled tarp on the dock, a trailer tire on its side, a fire pit that has not been tipped since last autumn. Each one holds water about a week and that is all this species needs.

The other local source is the debris line. Wind and fluctuating lake level push floating rubbish into shaded coves and leave it on the bank: bottles, buckets, polystyrene, the odd tire. On a cove lot that line is the first thing a crew should walk, and it is usually the first thing a crew skips.

2  Where your lot stops

On Lake Allatoona, the land between your boundary and the water is usually federal shoreline managed by the Corps of Engineers, not yours to treat. Around Lake Acworth, the beach and park land belongs to the city. Either way there is a strip at the bottom of the garden that a contractor working for you cannot spray, and you should hear that said plainly before you sign anything.

That limit is workable because this mosquito does not travel far. The realistic plan is a dense barrier on the shaded foliage along your own boundary, total source removal inside it, and a seating area set back from the shoreline brush rather than pushed up against it. If somebody promises you a mosquito-proof dock, they are describing something they do not control.

It is also worth asking the crew what they will do about the parts of the lot that are hard to reach: under the deck, behind the boat house, the slope down to the water where nobody mows. Those are the shaded resting sites that matter, and they take time rather than product. The method in full is in the complete guide.

Say how close you are to the water

A cove lot on Allatoona and a Brookstone back yard are different jobs with different seasons. A licensed local crew should walk the shoreline edge before quoting either.

3  The 2000s subdivisions inland

Most of Acworth is not on the water. The bulk of the housing went up around and after 2000, in neighborhoods like Bentwater and Brookstone, on lots that were cleared and replanted rather than carved out of standing woods. That changes the picture: young ornamental trees, limited canopy, open lawns that dry out by midday, and therefore far less natural resting habitat than Kennesaw has a few miles south.

The containers are different too, and they are mostly builder-era hardware. Corrugated downspout extensions laid in the bed and sagging in the middle. Irrigation valve boxes with a few inches of water in the bottom. Shallow landscape drains that silt up and stop draining. A play set with hollow legs and open end caps. The toy pool nobody emptied. On an inland Acworth lot these are the whole problem, and they are also the easiest to fix for nothing.

Because the lots are close together, a weak flier does not need to cross much ground. If one house on the street stores a boat under a tarp all summer, several neighbors feel it. That is awkward to raise but it is the real answer on these streets.

5  Questions

Is living on Lake Allatoona always worse for mosquitoes?

Worse for the length of the season and the humidity, not necessarily for the number of insects. The open lake is poor larval habitat. What makes a lake lot bad is the shaded shoreline brush, the shoreline debris line and the pile of boating gear that holds water between weekends. Deal with the gear and a lake lot can be better than a shaded inland one.

Can a company treat down to the shoreline?

Usually not all the way. On Allatoona the strip below your boundary is federal shoreline, and around Lake Acworth the beach and park land belongs to the city. Ask where treatment stops on your lot and get the answer before work starts rather than after.

What should I do with the boat cover?

Take the sag out of it or pull it tight so nothing pools, and check it after every storm. A cover with a shallow puddle in the middle is one of the most productive containers on a lake lot, and it refills faster than any barrier treatment can keep up with.

When does the season start in Acworth?

Earlier than inland. County-wide the window is April to October, but on frontage at either lake you can be bitten in late March and again well into November, because the water moderates the air temperature and the ground near it stays damp. Plan the interval around your own lot, not a calendar.
